The National Park That Felt Like Another Country 🌴

Hey Reader,

I'm not sure what I was expecting on my first trip to American Samoa.

But boy, was it an adventure.

I've lived in West Africa and winged my way around places like Kenya and Colombia. I thought I had a pretty good idea of what to expect when traveling somewhere unfamiliar.

American Samoa might be a U.S. territory, but it feels much more like visiting a different country than visiting a typical National Park and US states. In many ways, it reminded me of Equatorial Guinea.

The first thing that surprised me was how difficult it was to get there. Unlike most National Parks, you can't just book a flight and show up. There are limited routes, limited flight schedules, and a few logistical quirks that can turn a dream trip into a headache if you don't know about them ahead of time.

The second thing that surprised me was how different the pace of life felt. Things move a little slower. Schedules are more flexible. The culture is different. And honestly, that's part of what makes the islands special.

Even years later, American Samoa remains one of the most memorable National Park trips I've ever taken.

Inside, you’ll find:

  • Several multi-day itineraries
  • Where to stay and how to get around
  • What to prioritize (and what to skip)
  • Key logistics most visitors don’t realize until they arrive
